Hiking the Porkies

The Porcupine Mountain Wilderness area is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The park is 60,000 acres of pristine wilderness in the north woods, set on the shores of Lake Superior.

The planning for our hike started in the winter time. Planning can never be done to early for any backpacking trip because you have to carry everything into camp on you back. Preparation is the key to a successful trip. Our plan was to hike about three miles into Mirror Lake and stay in one of the 16 cabins in the park that can be rented on a daily basis.

These cabins are furnished with bunk beds, a wood stove and a few cooking utensils. Each cabin has a journal where you can write about your adventure and also read about the adventures of others.

The departure day finally arrived. We loaded up the van and pulled out of the driveway. The children were jumping around in their seats with excitement and that excitement was very contagious. I was loving it!

When we pulled up to the trailhead the adventure was on. This was the first official backpacking trip that the children had been on and I was hoping they would be up to the challenge. You just can’t predict how children will react to new experiences. Well, they took to hiking like fish to water. They loved every minute of it.

The lush, green canopy of old growth invites you into vast wilderness with open arms. With each step forward you feel as though you’re going back in time to a scene that the Native Americans and the first European explorers would bare witness to. The thought gives me shivers up my spine.

Just think about it. I was experiencing an ecosystem that has been the same for thousands of years and so can you. It doesn’t get any better than this.

We hiked the three miles to the cabin with ease and in a short time we settled in for our stay. We spent the next few days exploring the steep bluff behind the cabin, playing mountaineer, fishing the lake and relaxing.

So now it’s your turn to introduce a little adventure into your life. Dust off that camping gear and enjoy the summer. I’ll see you on the trail.
